Zurich

Grossmuenster

With a population of some 363,000 inhabitants Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. It is located in the heart of Europe and is easily accessible by plane, train and car. Situated 409 meters (1340 ft) above sea level, Zurich borders the northern end of the Lake of Zurich. Its well-preserved Old Town is located on both banks of the River Limmat. The highest point of the city is called Uetliberg/Uto Kulm; 871 meters (2857 ft) above sea level. It is accessible by train or a one-hour hike and allows a beautiful view over the lake and the Swiss alps.

Hotels

Workshop attendees need to make their own hotel arrangements. The university area can be easily reached from most parts of the city. Nevertheless, when booking a hotel you may want to check how long it takes you to get to the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) with public transport. The following hotels are within easy walking distance: Leoneck, Plattenhof, Florhof, Rigihof, Poly, Sunnehus.

Zurich Tourism provides useful online services: A Hotel List and Hotel Reservations. The latter sometimes offers better rates than you get at the hotels directly.

Weather

Zurich has a temperate climate, but often enjoys the warm, moisture-laden winds blowing from the Atlantic ocean. This results in a milder climate than its northern latitude of 47° might suggest. The mean temperatures in October range from 6°C to 14°C.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

General

Please use public transportation as you can. In most cases they are faster, cheaper and less stressful.

Arrival at the airport (Zurich Kloten)

After reclaiming baggage, follow the signs "Bahn/Railway" to ticket counters and machines. There are English instructions on the machine; follow them or simply press the left (red) key at the bottom, labeled "Zurich City" (make sure that the display shows "2 Std"). The machine prompts for CHF 5.40 and accepts coins as well as CHF 20.- bills and gives change. The ticket is valid for 2 hours on any train to Zurich as well as for the trams and buses in the city. Take an escalator down to the platforms 3 or 4. Trains to downtown leave approx. every 10 minutes and take about 10 minutes to reach Zurich main station (HB). A day ticket (valid 24 hours) for CHF 10.80 is also available.

Arrival by train at Zurich main station (Hauptbahnhof, HB)

At the main station find an exit towards "Bahnhofstrasse". Follow this street for about 50 m to the tram stop on the left-hand side. Trams number 6 and 10 take you to the University/ETH area. If you arrived by train and haven't yet got a tram ticket, you must now buy one from the blue ticket machine. Depending on your needs, you can buy a day ticket for CHF 7.20 which is valid for 24 hours for all trams and buses in the main zone (no. 10) of the city or, if all you need is to reach the University or ETH, press the yellow button and put in CHF 2.10 .
